October 15, 2024 [crocon media – tlei] NVIDIA Contributes Blackwell Platform to OCP, Boosting Open AI Infrastructure

At the OCP Global Summit, NVIDIA unveiled its latest contribution to the Open Compute Project (OCP), aiming to drive innovation in AI infrastructure. The company announced the release of foundational elements of its Blackwell accelerated computing platform to the OCP community. This move will provide the ecosystem with essential designs such as the GB200 NVL72 system, liquid-cooling, and NVLink™ cable specifications, helping organizations worldwide create scalable and efficient data centers.

NVIDIA’s commitment to open standards is critical as AI workloads grow increasingly complex. This year, NVIDIA expanded its Spectrum-X Ethernet networking platform to align with OCP standards, further empowering companies to adopt AI-driven data centers using OCP-recognized equipment while preserving their software investments.

Jensen Huang, NVIDIA’s CEO, emphasized the importance of collaboration in building the next generation of AI factories. “By advancing open standards, we’re enabling organizations to leverage the full potential of accelerated computing,” said Huang, reinforcing NVIDIA’s leadership in both high-performance computing and AI.

The Blackwell platform is part of NVIDIA’s larger strategy to accelerate the shift toward AI-focused data centers. Its GB200 NVL72 system connects 36 Grace™ CPUs and 72 Blackwell GPUs, delivering 30x faster inference on large-scale AI models compared to previous generation GPUs. This architecture is designed to support next-generation AI, empowering industries ranging from cloud computing to machine learning.

The inclusion of ConnectX-8 SuperNICs, capable of 800Gb/s, enhances networking performance for massive AI workloads, enabling seamless scale-out of AI infrastructure across industries. Meta’s collaboration with NVIDIA, utilizing the Blackwell platform for its Catalina AI rack architecture, further highlights the growing adoption of NVIDIA’s open computing standards.

As AI becomes increasingly integral to business operations, NVIDIA’s open hardware contributions will continue to be pivotal in enabling organizations to build efficient, high-density compute environments that meet the growing demands of the AI era.
